TeacherOn was originally founded in Delhi as TutorIndia.net in 2009, later rebranded as a global platform claiming to operate in 125 countries. On the surface it sounds credible. The real experience is a different story.

How the coin system works

When a student posts a tutor requirement, tutors must spend coins to apply for it. Coins are purchased — 50 coins cost roughly ₹100. Premium leads require more coins. There is no guarantee the student ever responds. The platform profits from every bid regardless of outcome.

TeacherOn's rating on Sitejabber is 1.4 out of 5 stars. The platform has been publicly called a “cattle market where tutors are the cattle.” For Indian students, having no support channel means any problem — a fake tutor, a payment dispute, a no-show — goes completely unresolved.

The double-charging model

UrbanPro charges tutors in two ways. First, a per-lead fee to respond to a student enquiry. Then, a 15–20% commission on every session booked through the platform.

A tutor charging ₹1,000 per month per student takes home ₹800–850 after UrbanPro's cut — having already paid for the lead.

Built for metros, not Bihar

UrbanPro's content and categories are almost entirely metro-focused — Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad. Students in Patna, Bhagalpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, or Varanasi find thin listings, no Bihar Board tutor category, no BPSC or Railway exam support, and no Hindi interface.
